Make your own sundial!

Make your own sundial with Abdullah & Aminah

Abdullah Little Explorers let’s make our very own sundial so we can tell the time of day without a clock

Sundial 1

Ameenah  You will need:

  •  Paper plate
  • Plastic straw
  • Markers and pencil
  • Plasticine
  • Tape
  • Ruler

Ameenah  How to make your sundial:

  • Write the numbers 1 to 12 on your paper plate, as they appear on the face of a clock.
  • With the pencil, poke a hole through the center of the plate.
  • Place the straw, standing upright, in the hole and use plasticine and tape to secure
  • it in place.

Abdullah  How to use your sundial

  •  Choose a flat surface for your sundial on a sunny day.
  •  Ensure that the number 12 is pointing North. Do this by going outside at noon and carefully turning the plate  until the shadow of the straw falls in line with the number 12.
  •  You will now be able to tell the time of day by looking at the shadow cast on the surface of the dial by the straw.
